Teachers who Attended AP 2006



The Institute for Computing Education (ICE) at the Georgia Institute of Technology is pleased to offer a College Board endorsed CS-AP workshop July 10-13th for both A and AB teachers. Teachers who complete the workshop will receive 3 PLUs. This course will be taught by Barbara Ericson.

You must have experience in Java before taking this workshop! If you do not have Java experience please take
Intermediate Prog in Java June 26-27 and July 6-7 2006 first and you should teach the Programming and Systems Management class (or the new Beginning Programming or the new Intermediate and GUI Programming) for a year before you take this workshop.

If you do not have any programming experience we recommend that you take Beginning Programming in Java June 12-15 and 19-22 2006 first and teach the Programming and Systems Managment class (or the new Beginning Programming class) for a year or two before you take the next workshop (Intermediate Prog in Java).

The schedule for the workshop is:
10-5:30 Monday
8-4:30 Tues - Thurs

This workshop is aimed at preparing teachers to teach the CS-AP course. The workshop will have lots of hands-on exercises that teachers can use in their classrooms. This workshop will cover object-oriented concepts, the case study, and the exam. The workshop will use a variety of activities to help you understand these concepts: lecture, role-playing, small programming assignments, and object-oriented analysis and design using CRC and UML. We will do break-out groups for more advanced topics like data structures, searching, and sorting. We will use examples from Media Computation for teaching some of the concepts. Media Computation is teaching computing concepts by writing programs that manipulate media. For example, negate an image, mirror an image, reverse a sound, weave music phrases in a linked list, create a tree of sounds, create a circular linked list of images for a simple animation. Students
at Georgia Tech have found Media Computation to be interesting and relevant even if they are not computer science
majors.

Georgia Tech will pay for Georgia public school teacher's room and board if you are from outside of the Atlanta area. You will be staying at the Georgia Tech Hotel with two teachers per room, unless you which to pay an additional $62.00 a night for a private room. Private school and out of state teachers will need to cover their own hotel and meals (except lunch).

The tuition for the workshop is $425 per person. A deposit of $125 must be received by June 12, 2006. The balance is due by July 3rd, 2006. The deposit is refundable until June 12, 2006. Checks or purchase orders should be made out to the Georgia Institute of Technology. Space is limited to 30, so please send your deposit as soon as possible. Send your payment to:
