The goal of this workshop is to start teachers on a path that will enable them to become AP teachers in 2-5 years. The idea is that they will take this workshop and teach the Programming and Systems Management Course 11.41800 (Beginning Programming - new name) for a year or a few years. And when they feel ready they will take the Intermediate course and teach that content for a year or more. Finally when the teacher feels ready she or he will take the AP workshop and teach the AP course. Some teachers may wish to only teach the introductory courses and not go on to become AP teachers.

The proposed dates for this workshop are: June 12-15 and 19-22, 2006. You must attend the entire workshop (8 days) to get 5 PLU credits. You are required to stay residential for this workshop since there will be evening activities! You will be staying at the Georgia Tech Hotel with two teachers per room unless you wish to pay the additional cost for a private room (an additional $62.00 a night).

The workshop will be held in the College of Computing Building at 801 Atlantic Drive. See Directions to the College of Computing Building for more information.

The schedule for the workshop is:

12-5 first day (Monday) starting with a lunch in a private dinning room at the Georgia Tech Hotel
8-4:30 second day
8-4:30 third day
8-12 last day (Thurs)

There will be evening activies as well on Monday and Wednesday nights. These will include: Alice (a 3d animation environment), LEGO Mindstorms robots, and demonstrations of research. Evening activities will start at 7:30pm and go till 9:30pm.

This workshop is intended for people with little or no programming experience. We will cover the basics (variables, operators, syntax, methods, class, object, etc) by writing programs to manipulate media (image, sound, movies, and text). The workshop will be using the programming language Java.
