The Institute for Computing Education (ICE) is hosting an Introduction to Scratch and Alice workshop on Saturday, Oct 22, 2011 from 8:30am - 4:00pm at Georgia Tech. Barbara Ericson and Christopher Michaud will be leading this workshop so we will be able to split into beginner and advanced groups. The workshop will take place in the Klaus Advanced Computing Building, Rooms 1456 and 1447 (Directions to the Klaus Advanced Computing Building). Teachers must attend the entire workshop, do 2 hours of extra work, attend a webinar, and submit a Scratch and/or Alice project for credit. The webinar will be Wed Nov 30th from 8pm - 9pm. All teachers must register at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/introtoscratchandalice. Georgia public school teachers must also register at http://www.ctaern.org for workshop CTAERN3341 in the new catalog.

Teachers will build a 2D animation and a game in Scratch and 3D movies (animations) in Alice. Teachers will use drag-and-drop programming. Both Scratch and Alice are free software. Scratch is available from http://scratch.mit.edu and Alice from http://www.alice.org. The workshop will explain how to cover introductory computing concepts such as: class, object, method, parameter, function, variable, iteration (looping), conditional execution, and event-driven execution. Each teacher will receive materials including slides, exercises, lesson plans, and grading rubrics. This material can be used in Technology, Computing in the Modern World, Beginning Programming, or AP CS A.

This workshop is free for Georgia teachers, and if you live > 30 miles from Georgia Tech we will pay for your hotel for Friday night (2 teachers per room), Friday night dinner, and Sat breakfast. Room service and alcohol are not covered! If you would prefer a private room you can pay 1/2 the hotel cost.
