As we embark on the 5G era, wireless networks will be even more essential in connecting billions of users and things. In this new era, democratization of spectrum resources and wireless access will enable rapid innovation by bringing up continuous development, integration, and deployment to transform the network planning and deployment processes that historically took years. Today, only about half of the world's population has access to the Internet according to the GSMA and Internet Exclusivity Index. To provide connectivity to the other half, we need to address availability, cost, and relevance. Wireless networks are important as it can provide flexible availability at low cost. However, today the telecommunication industry is dominated by proprietary solutions, which limits innovation, puts a barrier to participation, and drives costs.

We see two divergent R&D ecosystems in the academia and the industry that can address these issues. In the academic world, wireless research testbeds are being built with an emphasis on pushing the next generation applications and the network infrastructure needed for such applications. In the industry, efforts such as TIP, Magma, ORAN, OMEC, etc., are trying to break away from the traditional Telco infrastructures and accelerate deployment, feature development and customization of networks via functional (hardware and software) disaggregation, flexible integration, control and user plane separation, and automation. We believe that an open source ecosystem can harmonize the two ecosystems, and allow greater participation. This workshop is geared towards bringing these two ecosystems together for fostering open collaboration and partnership between academia and industry.
