The Institute for Computing Education (ICE) will hold a 4 day Computing in the Modern World workshop June 17-20th at Georgia Tech in the U.A. Whitaker Biomedical Engineering Building (BME) in room 1103 Directions_to_the_BME_building.doc. Georgia's new Computing in the Modern World course includes approxiamtely 7 weeks of computer programming (seehttp://www.georgiastandards.org/career.aspx?PageReq=PhaseI). The Computing in the Modern World course is based on the ACM's Model Curriculum for K-12 Education's Computer Science in the Modern World Level II course.

This workshop is for teachers with no or little experience in computer programming. It will introduce basic concepts of computer programming using Scratch, Alice, and LEGO NXT robots. Scratch is free software from MIT that allows kids to learn programming concepts while creating 2D animations and games (seehttp://scratch.mit.edu). Alice is free software from CMU that allows you to teach drag-and-drop programming by having students create 3D movies and games (seehttp://www.alice.org). LEGO NXT robots can also be programmed in a drag-and-drop environment.

Teachers who are teaching or who plan to teach any computing class can take this workshop.

This workshop will cover the basics of computer programming including problem solving, algorithms, computer hardware, variables, loops, conditionals, list processing, event handling, objects, and classes.
We will also learn computing concepts by using activities from CS Unplugged (seehttp://csunplugged.org). These activities teach about binary numbers, encoding, error detection, networking and more.

The workshops will be held at the Georgia Institute for Technology in Atlanta, Georgia. You must attend all 4 days in order to receive 3 PLUs/b. The hours are from 8:30am - 4:00pm each day (with at least 1 hour of homework each evening). There is a $320 fee for this workshop for Georgia teachers. Out of state teachers will pay $425.00. Due to a NSF grant we will be able to cover hotel, parking, and food for Georgia teachers who live greater than 30 miles from Georgia Tech. Qualified Georgia teachers will be staying at the Regency Suites and the link to their site ishttp://www.regencysuites.com/. Teachers will be staying two teachers to a room unless s/he wishes to pay the addtional cost for a private room which is $64.50/night. We will also cover lunch for all teachers. Preference is given to teachers who are teaching Computing in the Modern World or Beginning Programming in the Fall of 2008.

Checks or purchase orders should be made out to the Georgia Institute of Technology. Space is limited to 40, so please send your payment as soon as possible. The payment is refundable up to 1 month before the workshop begins. Send your payment to:
