We are just about half-way through the survey period for Spring
semester. The course/instructor opinion surveys are available for students
at http://www.coursesurvey.gatech.edu. Students log on using their gt
account information (the same log on and password as they use for getting
their GT email). Surveys are open until 11:59pm on Sunday, May 8th; and
they are available 24/7 with short breaks (5-10 minutes) for backups a
couple of nights a week. If your students have any problems with the
system, please tell them to email CETLhelp@gatech.edu with "CIOS help" in
the subject line. Thanks.

Abstract:
Pixar has developed some of the world's most advanced techniques for generating computer animated feature films, recently receiving two Oscars for, "The Incredibles." In this talk, I plan to discuss the rendering research and development that occurs at Pixar and the techniques behind the feature film production process. My talk will touch on a number of topics that students should master in order to be attractive candidates for the feature film industry. Sequences from Pixar's latest film, "The Incredibles" will be used as a case study for presenting the various pieces of technology required to create the final product.

Bio:
Wayne Wooten works in the RenderMan Tools group at Pixar Animation Studios. He works as a member of the research and development team at Pixar to develop new rendering software for use on animated feature films. His film credits include a "A Bug's Life," "Toy Story 2," "Monster's Inc." and "Finding Nemo." Wayne's recent film credit is for "The Incredibles," where he helped develop new rendering techniques for many effects in the film. Wayne currently works for Pixar in Seattle and is busy developing new rendering techniques for Pixar's next movie "Cars."

Wayne received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1998. His graduate research at the Animation Lab involved generating motion for computer animated human athletes by using control systems in combination with physically realistic dynamic simulation.

The College of Computing is accepting applications for undergraduate students to serve as teaching assistants for these Summer 2005 courses:

CS 1315, CS 1322, CS 1371, CS 2200, CS 2335, CS 2340

We are also accepting applications for these Fall 2005 courses:

CS 1315, CS 1316, CS 1321, CS 1322, CS 1371, CS 2110, CS 2200, CS 2335, CS 2340

Ideal candidates will be: SOPHOMORES, JUNIORS, or SENIORS in good academic standing who have an A or B in the course for which you want to TA.

The College of Computing will be hiring undergraduate "helpers," like teaching assistants, for the summer workshops that we hold each year for high school teachers learning to teach computer science and CS AP (see http://coweb.cc.gatech.edu/ice-gt). We're looking for responsible students familiar with the content of CS1315 and with Java (Why, that sounds like CS1316 students!) who will be good at working with the high school teachers (e.g., articulate, friendly, patient). If you are interested, please contact Assistant Dean Maureen Biggers at maureen@cc.gatech.edu.

Dates of workshops:
June 28 - July 1st
July 5-8 and 12-15
July 18-22.

Here are my (Mark Guzdial) office hours for the next few weeks, all on the 2nd floor of Student Center:
- Friday Feb 11, just 1-1:30 (though you're welcome to grab me at lunch in Student Center Cafeteria 12-1).
- Monday Feb 14, 10-11 am
- Tuesday Feb. 15, 2-3:30 pm
- Monday Feb 21, 10-11 am
- Tuesday Feb 22, 12-1. (Have to leave by then for 3 pm flight.)
- Then Monday Feb 28 10-11 and back to regular schedule.

Two weeks in a row, I'm afraid. I won't be at office hours Friday Feb. 4. I'm on a committee to study Physics 2211/2212 (and the failure rate in those classes.) (If you have any insight for me, on what needs to be fixed in those classes, PLEASE DO LET ME KNOW!.) We're having our first meeting at 1 pm.
So here's my alternative offer: After class, I'm going to go have lunch in Student Center. Anyone who wants to come over and join me and ask questions then (12-1) is most welcome! Sorry I can't do the normal time again! Mark Guzdial

I did miss one of the files when I recompiled things for you. (There may be more later.) FileChooser is still not going to work as-is. Here's what you need to do:
- Click "Open" on the title bar.
- Choose "FileChooser.java" from your java-sources directory
- Click "Compile All" on the title bar.
- That's it! You're done! You can now use FileChooser.pickAFile().
I (Mark Guzdial) will have additional office hours WEDNESDAY JAN 19 from 10-11 at the 2nd floor Student Center.

Class Pictures-Spring 2005 are now available for you to put your name on!

JAVA-SOURCES FIXED! Download the java-sources.zip again from Course notes and other materials and use that instead of the one from the CD. (You'll need to extract it, first.) This one works fine with Java 1.4.2. (For those fortunate enough to have a Mac, even the old java-sources works just fine – I tested that first.)
- EITHER DELETE THE OLD FOLDER, OR REMOVE IT FROM YOUR DRJAVA PREFERENCES! Otherwise, DrJava may try to use the older pictures.
