Admin: Tracie Straub,
- November 2016: I gave the 2016 Distinguished Bradley Lecture at
Virginia Tech University, titled "Preparing for a Post Moore's
Law World", and it was a fantastic visit, especially seeing my
former PhD student Prof. Leyla Nazhandali!
- June 2016: Our paper "A2:
Analog Malicious Hardware" won the Distinguished Paper
Award at the 2016 IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy!
The paper was also nominated for a 2016 Pwnie Award, in the category
of "Most Innovative Research".
- May 2016: Cory Doctorow (I'm a fan!) wrote an article on my
recent A2 analog malicious circuit work,
Undetectable proof-of-concept chip poisoning uses analog circuits to
escalate privilege, in BoingBoing.
- May 2016: Misiker Aga and Salessawi Ferede Yitbarek won a C-FAR
Best Student Demo Runner-Up Award, for the demo "Cold Boot
Attacks on the DDR3 Memory Scrambler".
- February 2015: My PhD student Bill Arthur's paper "Getting
in Control of Your Control Flow with Control-Data Isolation",
which develops a powerful technique to stop code injection security
attacks, appeared in CGO-2015, congratulations Bill!
- February 2015: I participated (with 36 other UM faculty and
students) in the EM-PACE workshop in Ethiopia, a two day workshop to
foster collaborations between University of Michigan and
universities in Ethiopia (e.g., AAiT, AAU). The event was a
great success with many new initiatives and collaborations
developed. Two articles on the event are online:
- November 2014: The
(which I am the director of) completed its second year of operation,
capped off by a two day meeting in Ann Arbor, where faculty, student
and sponsors met to collaborate and discuss center research.
- January 2013: I am director of a new computer architecture
center, called the
Future Architectures Research (C-FAR). The center is
exploring techniques to continue scaling the performance, power and
cost of computing into the 2020-2030 era. Here are two articles that
describe the center:
New $28M Center Will Develop Computers of 2025
Center for Future Architectures Research
- December 2012: A new textbook I co-authored with Andrew
Tanenbaum has hit the shelves! It is
Structured Computer Architecture, 6th Ed..
You can see the detailed outline of the book
here. Please email me
if you would like to receive an instructor evaluation copy.
- September 2012: I recent returned from my sabbatical where I was
teaching in Ethiopia. It was an amazing experience, you can
read more about it in these two articles:
