Network Issues
In order to design a communication system with near optimum performance many of the network layer problems must be addressed. Two of the basic parameters that need to be decided are:
Voice information generally needs low delay (e.g. on the order of 20-50ms) but can tolerate fairly high packet error rate (e.g. 10-2). Command and control data needs very low packet error rates but delays on the order of seconds may be acceptable. Longer packet delay usually allows better error control coding. Multicasting refers to the capability of a transmitter to send different types of data (e.g. speech and command and control data). We are examining various techniques to provide both services simultaneously.
