Comment area for Week of February 27

So, whatcha thinkin' about these days?

So..what happens if I don't do HW6 with a partner? I have a bit of a shy problem......and I fear my lack of computer science skills will make said partner angry.....

It's 5 points off the top of the grade...
And somebody'll be rather upset that another classmate won't partner up...

Yup. I'm considering raising the penalty points on future homework, in case five points isn't enough incentive. Really – there's a lot of evidence that pair penalty is a really good learning activity, so I'm all-but-requiring it. Mark Guzdial

Why would someone be mad that another classmate didn't partner up? It seems that the lone person would be at a loss. Two minds working on a piece of code seems better than one. Unless the lone person is causing someone else to have to work alone too, then it would be bad.

HW6 reminds me of a project I did in 1315..but this one has sound

Cheddar and sour cream potato chips are oddly delicious

I'm REALLY interested to hear what y'all thought of the video lecture Wednesday – that's the first time I ever tried building one. (I can't believe that the 35 minute video took me FIVE HOURS to build!) What did you think? Is it "It's okay – I'd rather have a real lecture, but it worked"? Or "That was the most gawd-awful thing I ever saw – burn the DVD and don't ever think of doing THAT again!" Mark Guzdial

It was pretty good– nothing like having a real person who can get a sense of where we can speed up and slow down and field questions, but it still got the point across.
I would like to have seen it at a slightly higher resolution; it was mostly very clear, but some of the slides with a bit more text on them came out fuzzy on the projector.
This sort of thing would make a really neat companion-type media for the class. It would be very helpful to be able to download and work through these sort of explanations, since they can be paused, rewinded, etc. But I guess then people might think they didn't need to show up for class...

So I guess I'm in the "I'd rather have a real lecture, but it worked" camp. The video was essentially demonstrating a step-by-step process, assuming that we already understood the principles involved, so if we hadn't already done a good bit of stuff on inheritance and super classes and so forth, I don't think we would have understood what was happening (and why).
I don't think it can convey as much as a lecture, but it worked really well for what it was designed to do on Wednesday.

Well, I'll just say that the video lecture was suprising to say the least....
The DVD was actually pretty good, but some of the slides were very, very hard to read. A side effect putting Powerpoint on a DVD I guess? Also, some of the audio overlapped. It wasn't very bad overlapping, but it was easy to notice.
It was OK, but I would prefer an actual person I could talk to and ask questions to.
I prefer that, too. (I do like teaching.) But I couldn't get anyone willing to come in and code live in front of y'all, so I decided that a recording was the next best thing. Mark Guzdial

Some people don't think they need to show up to class because they can get the slides used in class from the CoWeb site.
"Why listen to somebody going over these slides for an hour or longer when I can do the same thing when I want to?" kind of ideal.
Guess they haven't come to class enough to realize that I don't just "go over the slides." Not coming means that you miss the live coding, the demos, and how to get out of errors. Mark Guzdial

I have a very uncommon sense of accomplishment right now. I actually did a homwework assignment for this class, AND it has no errors. Hooray me.
HOORAY YOU! That's great! Mark Guzdial

Um...does anyone know where the comment "freakin sweet" comes from? I'm just curious to know where everyone got it from.

You...............................can't..................be.....................serious....................

It's from Family Guy. Peter says it all the time.

I took a look at the homework page...and the next one isn't due until...APRIL 7th!?! A WHOLE MONTH!?! Is it really going to be that long and hard to do? I'm scared.
That's a mistake on my part. Check out the Syllabus now – the assignment is due the Friday before break, and I created one for this week that you can do if you're looking for something else to try FOR EXTRA CREDIT! Mark Guzdial
