Comments on Week of 18 and 25 April 2005

Questions still stand from last week!

Do you see a use for Continuous Simulations in your field? (I mean, other than making cartoons of birds chasing eggs...)
Do you see a use for Discrete Event Simulations in your field?
What do you want to cover in Dead Week, where that involves covering material that is relevant to the class, interesting, but not important enough to land on the final exam? (Friday of Dead Week will be a final exam review period.) Topics I'm considering:
- I could talk about StarLogo (http://education.mit.edu/starlogo/), and maybe another kind of simulation toolkit (http://www.squeakland.org).
- I could talk about REMOVEDce (a 3-D storytelling tool) http://www.alice.org
- or about Lisp or Scheme (where the same notation is used for both behavior and structure) http://ocw.mit.edu/OcwWeb/Electrical-Engineering-and-Computer-Science/6-001Structure-and-Interpretation-of-Computer-ProgramsFall2002/CourseHome/index.htm
- Or about how to build data structures in Python

Remember your observation that JMusic would only do 14 measures? I finally got a reply on that!

Hi Mark,

There is a limit to the size of a Panel object (it appears) that causes this rather than the number of measures (bars). This would be improved if the stave split onto several Panels (but it does not). Perhaps this could be a student project at your Uni to add to jMusic ; )

You are also correct that it it not documented.

Yes, some people are exceptionally busy this week and they are more than welcome to turn it as early as they please. Personally I would prefer another day to work out my code. Thank you!

You can turn it in late, but with a points deduction – 5 points tomorrow, 10 points Wednesday. To do otherwise would be unfair to people who planned to turn this in and move on to other work. Mark Guzdial

For a CS minor, eighteen credit hours are required...only six of which can be below 3000 level. How many 2000 level courses would we need to reach the 3000 levels? By that time, we would have already taken 1315, 1316, and 1322 and still not any credit toward the minor. Thank you!

I know – it does suck. The rules about 12 credits above 3000 level are Institute rules. It is possible to take two 2000-level classes and have enough pre-reqs to take interesting 3000-level-and-above courses, but basically, the minor starts after 1322. EAS does the same thing with their minor – all the 1000-level stuff doesn't count. I'm sorry – this is the best that I could get arranged. Mark Guzdial
