{"id":426,"date":"2016-05-04T14:06:25","date_gmt":"2016-05-04T14:06:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/web.eecs.umich.edu\/~girasole\/?p=426"},"modified":"2022-05-03T14:06:54","modified_gmt":"2022-05-03T14:06:54","slug":"productive-spring","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.eecs.umich.edu\/~girasole\/?p=426","title":{"rendered":"Productive spring"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This spring I&#8217;ve had a couple opportunities to share work with Ravi Sastry Ganti and Rebecca Willett on <a href=\"https:\/\/papers.nips.cc\/paper\/5916-matrix-completion-under-monotonic-single-index-models\">Matrix completion under monotonic single index model observations<\/a> that we had at NIPS last December. In a week I&#8217;ll be at AI stats with my student Dejiao Zhang presenting our work on <a href=\"http:\/\/jmlr.org\/proceedings\/papers\/v51\/zhang16b.html\">Global convergence of a Grassmannian gradient descent algorithm for subspace learning<\/a> &#8212; we now have a proof that the <a href=\"http:\/\/web.eecs.umich.edu\/~girasole\/?page_id=190\">GROUSE subspace learning algorithm<\/a> converges globally from any random initialization to the global minimizer, or to a ball around the generating subspace in the case of noisy data.
