September 2018 to present. Toyotal Professor of Artificial Intelligence in the Division of Computer Science and Engineering, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

2015 to 2019. Co-Founder, CTO, and Chief Scientist of Cogitai, Inc., a startup focused on Continual Learning (purchased by Sony AI in 2020).

September 2008 to present. Professor in the Division of Computer Science and Engineering, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

July 2002 to August 2008. Associate Professor in the Division of Computer Science and Engineering, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

April 2001 to June 2002. Chief Scientist at Syntek Capital (now defunct). This was a sabbatical from pure research at a global venture capital firm investing in advanced technology companies in areas such as security, speech-recognition, natural-language processing, compression, data-mining, and network optimization.

August 1998 to April 2001. Principal Member Technical Staff in the Artificial Intelligence department at AT&T Labs. My research interests include: learning through interaction or reinforcement learning, computational game theory and auctions, spoken-dialogue systems, and text-chat agents in virtual environments.

August 1996 to August 1998. Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

August 1995 to August 1996. Senior Research Scientist in the Adaptive Systems Group headed by Peter Norvig at Harlequin Inc. (this once really fun company is now defunct).

August 1993 to August 1995. Postdoctoral Fellow with Prof. Michael Jordan in the Brain and Cognitive Science Department at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
