Teachers who attended Alice March 20009

The Institute for Computing Education (ICE) is proud to host an Alice workshop Saturday, March 21, 2008 from 8:30am - 3:30pm at Georgia Tech. The workshop will be held in the College of Computing building in room 17 (on the floor level). Teachers must attend the entire workshop and do 4 hours of additional work to get 1 PLU. Georgia public school teachers must register on http://ctaern.org. Private school teachers and out-of-state teachers (not in Georgia) can register at out-of-state or private registration. Please bring a laptop if you have one, or notify us if you need to borrow a laptop.

Teachers will build 3D movies and games using drag-and-drop programming in Alice which is free software from CMU (see http://www.alice.org). The workshop will explain how to cover introductory computing concepts such as: class, object, method, variable, iteration, conditional execution, and event-driven execution using Alice. Each teacher will receive a CD with all materials including slides, exercises, lesson plans, and grading rubrics. This material can be used in Technology, Computing in the Modern World, Beginning Programming, or AP CS A. This workshop will cover the recent developments in Alice. We will discuss the differences between Alice 2.0, 2.2, Storytelling Alice, and 3.0. We will do hands-on computing projects in Alice 3.0 and 2.2.

Teachers will create 3d animations in several versions of Alice while learning about computing concepts. They will learn how to make a movie using Alice 2.2 and how to switch back and forth with Java in Alice 3.0.

There is a $150 fee for this workshop. Due to a NSF grant we will be able to cover hotel, parking, and food for Georgia teachers who live greater than 30 miles from Georgia Tech for Friday night. Guests will be staying with two teachers per room, unless you wish to pay an additional cost for a private room. We will also cover lunch for all teachers. Checks or purchase orders should be made out to the Georgia Institute of Technology. Space is limited to 30, so please send your payment as soon as possible. The payment is refundable up to 1 week before the workshop begins. Send your payment to:
