Particle Computer is a platform for rapid prototyping of Ubiquitous and Pervasive Computing environments, for Ad-Hoc (Sensor) Networks, Wearable Computers, Home Automation and Ambient Intelligence Environments.
My current work tries to simplify the programming of these Particles and to provide a complete development environment which enables developers to quickly write applications for Particles.

Interpersonal communication involves more than just words. Many forms of communication involve physical acts showing warm thoughts and affection, such as giving flowers or displaying photos. Yet these forms of personal communication are difficult at a distance. We are investigating devices for communicating affection and thoughts from a distance. We detail two devices that we are exploring to support many of these physical interpersonal interactions—an augmented candy dispenser and a digital picture frame.

An interactive surface is a display (usually larger than 1m diagonal) that you interact with via touch or gesture. Our research uses projected light to create interactive surfaces on existing structures such as walls and tables. We are currently working on vision algorithms to detect occluders (people standing in the projection beam) so that we can avoid projecting on them.

Current projects in the ELC lab address learning in domains that span the
high school curriculum. AquaMOOSE 3D allows students to create three
dimensional art by describing paths using parametic equations. Palaver
Tree Online and the forthcoming Open Source History project encourage an
inquiry approach to history learning by connecting students to witnesses
of recent historical events and encouraging them to interpret past events
for themselves. IRC Francais explores the power of real time chat to
encourage foreign language practice and successive work is investigating
the quality of online student discourse in ethics courses. Anival is an
online community that is currently under development and will support the
collaborative creation of animation shorts.

striking a reasonable balance between privacy and the need for

Augur: A predictive shared calendar system

Electronic calendars, while essential for many work teams, are often
subject to poor maintenance, omissions, and conflicting events. The

Augur shared calendar system compensates for these problems by using a
probabilistic model of a person's attendance habits. By learning from
attendance at previous events, the system predicts which future events
users are likely to attend. These predictions serve to inform coworkers
whom they are likely to see on a given day and where they will see them.

If learners in project-based inquiry classes are able to understand, engage in, and carry out the processes involved in interpreting and applying cases effectively to their projects, they will not only learn those cases contents and lessons deeply and be able to apply those lessons later, but they may also be able to transfer interpretation and application skills to some other learning situations where application of cases is appropriate. This work seeks to understand and describe the path along which middle school students in a project-based inquiry learning environment acquire and develop the skills needed to apply expert cases to solve science problems.
