April 28, 2012 - Intermediate Greenfoot: Bringing Global Issues to Your Computer Science Course-Canceled
Thomas Cooper and Owen Mathews will lead this workshop from 8:30am to 4:00pm in room #1447 of the Klaus Advanced Computing Building. For directions see Directions to the Klaus Advanced Computing Building.
Teachers will create a game related to one of the U.N. Millennium Goals (http://www.un.org/millenniumgoals), such as reducing global hunger and disease. This game will be extended into a framework for a humanitarian aid simulation. This is a great opportunity to learn how to incorporate global issues into your computer science course. Teachers must have a working knowledge of Java to attend and should have done the Greenfoot tutorial.
Public school high school teachers must register on http://www.ctaern.org for workshop CTAERNXXX (look in new catalog). Everyone must also register at: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Greenfoot. Teachers must attend the entire workshop, do 2 hours of extra work, and attend a 1 hour webinar on May 22nd from 3:30pm - 4:30pm to get 1 PLU. Go to https://sas.elluminate.com/m.jnlp?password=M.C16C1BB42593A3C64408FFCF0E8D1E&sid=2009238 to join the webinar.
This workshop is free for Georgia teachers. Thanks to our National Science Foundation grants we can also pay for the hotel for Friday night (2 teachers per room), Friday night dinner, and Saturday breakfast if you are a Georgia teacher who lives more than 30 miles from Georgia Tech. If you would prefer a private room you can pay 1/2 the hotel cost. We do not cover alcohol or room service! We will cover parking for Georgia teachers who stay at the hotel and reimburse parking for Georgia teachers who do not stay at the hotel. We will pay for lunch for all teachers. Space is limited to 30.
Please bring a laptop if you have one, or notify us if you need to borrow a laptop. If you are bringing a laptop you must have a Java JDK (development environment) installed and also install Greenfoot.
Out-of-state teachers pay $140. Checks for $140.00 should be made out to Georgia Institute of Technology and sent to:

- How to collect real data from the internet on these issues and develop basic algorithms to represent the data
- How to create classes for an aid truck, different types of aid packages (seeds, water, medical supplies), cargo planes, villages and a local hospital
- How to create a simulation from a game
- How to draw statistical monitors in Java
- How to incorporate real-world stimuli in Greenfoot games and simulations
- How to access materials in the Greenroom for teachers
