May 5th, 2012 - App Inventor

Barbara Ericson will lead this workshop from 8:30am - 4:00pm in the Klaus Advanced Computing Building, Room #1447. For directions see Directions to the Klaus Advanced Computing Building. Teachers will create several cell phone applications using drag-and-drop programming in App Inventor for Android phones. Teachers will create a virtual cow bell, a fortune teller which picks a random fortune from a list, and a game that keeps track of how many times a button is pushed in a time period, and at least one other project.

Public school high school teachers must register on http://www.ctaern.org for workshop CTAERNXXXX(look in new catalog). Everyone must also register at: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/AppInventor. Teachers must attend the entire workshop, do 2 hours of extra work, and attend a 1 hour webinar on June 26th from 8:00pm - 9:00pm to get 1 PLU. This workshop is free for Georgia teachers, and if you live > 30 miles from Georgia Tech we will pay for your hotel for Friday night (2 teachers per room), Friday night dinner, and Saturday breakfast. Alchohol is not covered! If you would prefer a private room you will pay 1/2 the hotel cost. We will cover parking for Georgia teachers who stay at the hotel and reimburse parking for Georgia teachers who do not stay at the hotel. We will pay for lunch for all teachers. Space is limited to 30.

Teachers will learn how to teach the following concepts with App Inventor:

After completing this workshop teachers will be able to:
•Set up a computer and phone for App Inventor
•Create apps that use GUI elements such as buttons, labels, image sprites, and timers
•Create apps that use the accelerometer and camera
•Create apps that use lists
•Know where to go for more tutorials and resources
•Know how to borrow phones from Georgia Tech's Lending Library

Tenative Agenda:
8:30am - 9:00am - Introductions, Overview of App Inventor, How to set-up your computer and phone
9:00am - 10:30am - Create a virtual cow bell (create an image button that plays a sound when pushed)
10:30am - 12:00pm - Fortune Teller (pick a random fortune and display it)
12:00pm - 12:30pm - Lunch
12:30pm - 2:30pm - Create a button and count the number of times it is pushed in a time period. Save the maximum count so far on the phone.
2:30pm - 3:45pm - Do any of the other projects on our distance learning website
