Meet and Greet for Cohort 2, Summer 2010

CSTA website http://csta.acm.org. You should join! A Georgia Chapter is being formed and will have monthly meetings. The first meeting is Aug 14 from 11am - 3pm at Georgia Tech and the focus is Computing in the Modern World.

What makes a good teacher:

Extensive knowledge of the subject
Reflection: what worked and what didn't
The belief that all kids can learn and give the ample time to learn it (revise assignments)

What each team should discuss:

Classroom details (how many kids, what is the configuration of the room, when and where is the class, etc)
Classroom management - how will you handle problems
Lesson plans - who is teaching what
Grading - who will grade what

What do you need to do?

Join CSTA.
Do the pre-assessment with our evaluators.
Meet with your co-teacher to plan your classes.
Meet with your CS mentor 5 times (once before class starts if possible).
Go to the once a month Metro RESA evening classes.
Come to at least one fall workshop (more is better). See http://coweb.cc.gatech.edu/ice-gt/10
Come to at least one spring workshop (more is better).
Attend at least one of the summer computing workshops.
Have the students do the pre-surveys at the beginning of the year and again in May.
Recruit students for next year. Especially recruit women http://www.ncwit.org/about.factsheet.html and under-represented minorities.
Work on the CS Endorsement with Columbus State Un.
Treat this as your job: be on time, be professional, respond to e-mails within 24 hours
Learns as much as you can! Learn from Georgia Tech, your team, other teachers at the school, webinars, on-line materials, etc.
Try to teach things in different ways: active learning, kinesthic learning, etc.

Meeting with principals, API, etc to discuss what computing is and the importance of it
CSTA Georgia Chapter
Competitions: Alice, Scratch, AP Bowl
New once a month weekend program for 4-5th graders
High school program that requires teacher recommendation (not sure how extensive this will be)
More webinars for teachers and some for students
Distance learning website with tutorials in Scratch, Alice, Robots, etc
Timed tests website
