Oct 3, 2009 - Learning Computing Concepts with Robots

This workshop was cancelled due to low enrollment.

The Institute for Computing Education (ICE) at the Georgia Institute of Technology is pleased to offer a Robotics workshop Saturday October 3rd, 2009 from 8:30am - 3:30pm. Teachers who complete the entire workshop and an additional 4 hours of activities will receive 1 PLU. The workshop includes lunch. This workshop will take place in the Klaus Advanced Computing Building, room 1456 (see Directions to the Klaus Advanced Computing Building). All teachers must register at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=on7bNdHnS56naZM43SFmZg_3d_3d. Georgia public school teachers must also register at http://www.ctaern.org for workshop CTAERN2747.

This workshop is free for Georgia teachers, and if you live > 30 miles from Georgia Tech we will pay for your hotel for Friday night (2 teachers per room), Friday night dinner, and Sat breakfast. If you would prefer a private room you can pay 1/2 the hotel cost. We will cover parking for Georgia teachers who stay at the hotel and reimburse parking for Georgia teachers who do not stay at the hotel. We will pay for lunch for all teachers. Space is limited to 30.

Please bring a laptop if you have one, or notify us if you need to borrow a laptop.

Teachers will build LEGO robots and program them using drag-and-drop programming (NXT-G). The workshop will explain how to cover introductory computing concepts by programming robots such as: sequential execution, conditional execution, iteration, creating your own methods (my block), and event-driven execution.

10:45am - 12:00pm Program the robot to go through a course, perform a dance, and follow a black line.

2:30pm - 3:30pm Robot competitions (FIRST and RoboCup Jr), Lending Library, Rasing funds for your own robots, and surveys
