Rise Up 4 CS

Rise Up 4 CS is a project to help underrepresented students succeed in their Advanced Placement (AP) Computer Science courses (CSA and CSP). Participants report an increase in interest in computer science and typically have a higher pass rate than the average for their gender or race. They report enjoying the program. They also say it is where they get their questions answered and learn programming concepts at a deeper level.

We have been running Rise Up since the spring of 2013. Originally we targeted African American students taking AP CSA. Each year since we started this project a new record number of African Americans have passed the AP CSA exam in Georgia. In fall 2014 we added a project targeting female students called Sister Rise Up. Each year since we started Sisters Rise Up, a new record number of female students has passed the AP CSA exam in Georgia. In fall 2016 we opened Rise Up to all underrepresented students (females, African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, and Pacific Islanders) and added anoher project for the AP CSP course.

Rise Up offers both one-hour remote and three-hour in-person help sessions led by undergraduate students. All students need for the remote help sessions is a computer and internet connection. We also offer one-on-one one-hour remote help sessions. The in-person help sessions are held about once a month at Georgia Tech.
