One hour WeDo and Scratch Workshop

Remember to take good pictures. Examples can be found here: http://coweb.cc.gatech.edu/ice-gt/2242.

Ages: 3rd grade to 6th grade
Equipment: 1 laptop per two students, 1 WeDo kit per two students. Use Scratch 1.4 to program the WeDos. Also, include balls for the ball-kicker from the LEGO NXT kits. Using half the WeDo kits build the ball kicker (with the distance sensor) and goalie. Leave half of the kits for the kids to build the top spinner at the event in groups of 2.
Resources: A placemat for the ball kicker, goalie, and top spinner is at http://home.cc.gatech.edu/ice-gt/62. Print copies of this for each pair and for the student assistants. See http://wedodev.k12engineering.com/category/activities/ for other ideas.
Wireless issues- call 404-478-7310 for any problems with Wandering Wi-Fi

We don't do pre and post surveys with 1 hour workshops. But, be sure to take good pictures and movies. See How to take good pictures at our ICE events for more details.

5 minutes:
Introduce the workers and have each worker say what she or he likes about computing. Show the kids http://www.dotdiva.org/profiles/macherie.html and say you can combine jobs in computing with many other fields such as art, and computers and sensors can be used to help people and show http://www.dotdiva.org/profiles/yolian.html.

30 minutes:
Tell the students that Scratch is free software that they can use from home and that there are lots of things that they can do with Scratch: interactive art, music, stories, and games. Let them know that we usually have a competition in Scratch that is open to 4th graders and up and that they can win cool prizes.

Have one group work on the "Ball Kicker" and the next group work on the "Goal Keeper". Have them try to program the ball kicker or goalie in Scratch using the placemats. Then pair them up to see how many balls the "Ball Kicker" can get throught the "Goal" in 10 seconds. If they get bored have them switch what they are working on (folks that were doing the ball kicker would now program the goalie).

20 minutes:
Build the top spinner and program it.

5 minutes:
Take apart the top spinner and put it back in the box.
