goals for ICE

The goals for ICE are to increase the number of qualified computing teachers in Georgia and to increase the number and diversity of computing students in Georgia.

To increase the number of qualified computing teachers in Georgia we offer 1-2 week workshops in the summer as well as 1-2 day workshops during the school year. Barbara Ericson visits classes and provides feedback and assistance. We have created a database of practice questions for the AP exam that Georgia students can use to study for the exam. Students from Tech are available for visits to schools.

One particular goal is to increase the number of Computer Science AP teachers in Georgia. To accomplish that we are training teachers with little or no experience in programming to teach an introductory course (Programming and Systems Management) in Java. The plan is for teachers to teach the introductory course for a year or two and then take an Intermediate Programming in Java workshop. They will teach this content for a year and then take the summer AP workshop and start teaching the CS-AP course. Of course, teachers with some programming experience can start with the Intermediate Programming in Java workshop.

To increase the number and diversity of computing students we offer an interesting curriculum that features multimedia, exposure to LEGO robots, using Alice to create 3D movies and games, middle and high school student summer camps, visits by current Tech students, field trips to Georgia Tech, and talks on this subject during workshops.
