Before each workshop
During each workshop
Explain that Media Computation was developed at Georgia Tech by Dr. Mark Guzdial. The key idea is to teach
the normal computing concepts taught in an introductory computer science course by having students write programs that manipulate media: pictures, sounds, movies, and web pages. Show them some examples of student work at http://coweb.cc.gatech.edu/ice-gt/632
30 minutes - 45 mintues
Take student pictures in front of the greenscreen. Have them do some action and smile. You can do groups together. Then load the pictures on a computer and rotate them if neccesary and scale them down to about 225 by 300 size and distribute to the students.
2 hours
Go through the following powerpoint slides 01-IntroToMediaComp.ppt on this page and stop and have the students do each of the challenges.
30 minutes
Show the students how to do chromakey and change the background of the picture using the "Chromakey.ppt" slides on this page.
If the students still have time have them try to come up with other functions that change the colors in a picture in different ways.
After each workshop
For a second 4 hour workshop you can do the "02-RangesInPictures.ppt" slides on this page and then have the students work on an image collage of their own design.
For a third 4 hour workshop you can do the "03-ConditionalsInPictures" slides on this page.
