CLASS OF 1955: Where have you been?
So what've you been doing with yourself the last 40 years? Now there's a question...
Matter of fact, it's the question your faithful 40th WPHS Reunion Committee started asking all of you about a year ago, while twisting your arms to get you to join us in this event. Though we didn't get answers from everyone, the answers we got make for a very good read. So set aside some time and enjoy!
The following 29 pages are not just a directory of everybody we could track down by phone, FAX, E-mail, CD rom, ESP, and good old word of mouth. They're also an anthology of wit and wisdom--plus a few surprises. What it probably proves, as Jackie Schneider Dunning says (page 23), is that " '55 was a very good year--a vintage class," (if we don't say so ourselves).
We're all over the, place, in every part and state in the Union, as well as overseas. And we've travelled everywhere--from Antarctica to Zaire. We have enough doctors and nurses among us to start our own HMO, enough teachers and professors to start our own university, enough realtors to buy and sell South Florida, enough market and business savvy to take over Microsoft, and enough techies, managers, secretaries, and engineers to keep it running. (And we have enough lawyers to keep the doctors honest.)
Well, that may be a slight exaggeration. But we have artists, musicians, builders, welders, renovators, writers, a pilot, and at least one funeral director (who is also a magician) And yes we have our share of homemakers- (full and part-time).
Some of us are retired, some semi-retired, some just plain tired (still working). The best may be Ed McCarthy (page 17), who describes himself as "self-unemployed." (Think about that one.)
Collectively, we've produced at least 1,000 children and grandchildren-, tile individual record goes to Carol Furcolowe Scarcello with 11 and 17, respectively (eight wasn't enough).
All in all, it seems to have been a busy 40 years for the Class of '55, which, like that pesky rabbit, is still...going,
Welcome back. And stay in touch.

commented
about the depth of our friendship and how fortunate we are to
have remained so
close. Indeed we are. I've heard numerous expressions of disbelief
over the number
of high school friends I keep in touch with. It is sad that many
have no ties with
their HS years, including WPHS graduates from classes before and
after ours. Yes,
'55 was a 'very good year,' a vintage class. As for me, I don't
think I've changed a
whole lot -- I'd like to think I'm wiser, less naive, more tolerant,
more self-confident.

Along with raising a family and dogs, I have been teaching senior English in Darien for almost 20 years -- still measuring out my life in class bells, still staying up late to finish homework, still dealing with Scarlet Letter essays (the Hawthorne, not the Demi Moore variety), still working on the school newspaper. In 1950 the U.S. began fighting in the Korean War. During that same year the U.S. also launched one of the first satellites thus starting the space race to the moon with its chief competitor being Russia. During the time of the war a national emergency was declared due to the amount of Korean aid and the high price of automobiles. In 1952 Dwight D. Eisenhower was elected President, succeeding Truman. Three years after its start the Korean war was ended.
Man made many advances and decisions during this decade. It began with the aforementioned satellite, continued with the development of the hydrogen bomb, and concluded with British Edmund Hillary climbing Mt. Everest and the 1954 decision to ban school segregation. Added to this list could also be the advent of TV, Elvis Presley and Rock and Roll.
The U.S. gained two states during these years. In 1958 Alaska joined the union and In 1959 Hawaii rounded it out to 50 states.
The High School was growing. A business education day, the In-Service Training Course, gifted and ability level classes, the National Honor Society, typing and Russian classes were added to the curriculum.
A major construction move was made in 1950, when the storage room in the basement was converted to a beautiful student lounge. Students, and parents joined forces to decorate the lounge. Parents donated the furniture and the PTA made drapes, slip covers and bought a juke box. The Board of Education installed a new floor and fluorescent lighting. The room was put to good use; students gathered there for after school club activities; the PTA held evening meetings; and lunch groups used it for recreational purposes. Later, when more space was needed, it was unfortunately changed into a study hall and subsequently a large classroom.
The GO played a major role in school activities. They sponsored after school movies, held dances after basketball and football games, and constructed a float for the "Fest-i-Fair" parade. Other activities were the donkey-basketball games, and a beginning of the year tea for students. They also decorated school bulletin boards and had a special committee that prepared the display cases. One event that helped increase the school's morale was the Christmas tree in the front lobby. The GO also sponsored many assemblies, pep rallies, and entertainment, including a jazz concert.
There were many active GO subcommittees. The hall committee, which kept order in the halls, the Service committee, which kept the campus clean, and the Traffic Safety campaign, which fixed the safety hazards around the school. The GO also sold discount tickets for school activities, tiger feathers, pins, school stationery , and various accessories such as orange and black bookcovers imprinted with the school's name.
The members of the co-ed A Capella Choir during the 1950's sang at a testimonial dinner for Mayor Clark, the University Club, an "I-am-an -American Day" celebration, Grand Central Station, the Commodore Hotel, and the County Center. They sang carols every Christmas in the halls of the school.
The High School had a variety of musical groups in the 1950's. There were the Dell-Rays, the band, orchestra, glee club, the Dance Band, the Harmonettes girls' chorus, marching band, the Little Shavers (a barbershop quartet), and the Bengalaires boys' chorus. Of course there were many other clubs representing a wide range of student interest.
The sports activities continued to be a major part of school life. The cheerleaders were the main attraction with their counterparts the Bengalettes, Twirlers, Charlestonaires, Tigerettes. In 1958 the Twirlers and Tigerettes performed i n the Memorial Day Parade. The sports activities stayed pretty much the same from year to year with the addition of junior varsity activities in 1950. The boy's swimming team placed third in WIAA championships in 1957 and the following year came within two points of first place. They achieved a second in the WIAA track championships, a first in WIAA wrestling. The Jolly Stompers, though, won no awards as they were the school's original touch football club.
The newspaper, the Orange, won a gold medal in the Columbian Scholastic Press contest. The sophomores had a newspaper called the Newcomer.
School spirit was high. During Old Clothes Day everyone dressed up and celebrated with a dance and prizes at the school.
At the school Fest-i-Fair there was a parade, pet show, and
evening talent show. Booths sold everything from flowers to handmade
craft items, with proceedings going to the school newspaper and
the GO scholarship fund.

FOR ALL THOSE BORN BEFORE 1945
WE ARE SURVIVORS!
Consider the changes we have witnessed.
We were born before television, before penicillin, before polio shots, frozen foods, Xerox, plastic, contact lenses, Frisbees and the Pill.
We were born before radar, credit cards, split atoms, lazer beams and ballpointt pens. Before pantyhose, dishwashers, clothes dryers, electric blankets, air conditioners, drip-dry clothes and before man walked on the moon.
We got married first and then lived together. How quaint can you be?
In our time, closets were for clothes, not for "coming out of." Bunnies were small rabbits and rabbits were not Volkswagens. Designer jeans were scheming girls named Jean or Jeanne, and having a meaningful relationship meant getting along well with our cousins.
We thought fast food was what you ate during Lent and Outer Space was the back of the RKO Keiths Theater.
We were before house-husbands, gay rights, computer dating, dual careers and commuter marriages. We were before day-care centers, group therapy and nursing homes. We never heard of FM radio, tape decks, electric typewriters, artificial hearts, word processors, yogurt and guys wearing earrings. For us, time-sharing meant togetherness -- not computers or condos. A "chip" meant a piece of wood, hardware meant hardware and software wasn't even a word!
In 1940, "made in Japan" meant JUNK, and the term "making out" referred to how you did on your exam. Pizzas, McDonalds and instant coffee were unheard of.
We hit the scene when there were 5 and 10 cent stores, where you bought things for five and ten cents. Stores sold ice cream cones for a nickel or a dime. For one nickel, you could ride a street car, make a phone call, buy a Pepsi or enough stamps to mail one letter and two postcards. You could buy a new Chevy for $600, but who could afford one? A pity, too, because gas was I I cents a gallon!
In our day, cigarette smoking was fashionable, GRASS was mowed, COKE was a cold drink and POT was something you cooked in. ROCK MUSIC was a grandma's lullaby and AIDS were helpers in the principal's office.
We were certainly not born before the difference between the sexes was discovered, but we were surely born before the sex change. We made do with what we had, and we were the last generation that was so dumb as to think you needed a husband to have a baby!
No wonder we are so confused and there is such a generation gap today!! BUT WE SURVIVED!!! What better reason to celebrate?
