Tutorial participants bringing a lap top should download and check the EPIC software used for the tutorial ahead of time if possible. Download either the Windows or Macintosh files listed below. Please follow the instructions in the TutSoftwareReadme file, and contact kieras@eecs.umich.edu if you have any problems with getting the suggested checks to run successfully. The QuickStart documents provide an overview of the EPIC application windows and controls. These differ somewhat between the Mac and Windows versions. You may also want to download the reference manual on the EPIC architecture; this is the EPICPrinOP.pdf file in this directory. There are also four papers that you might find useful: TR-EPIC-5.pdf Kieras & Meyer technical report containing a good overview and summary of EPIC. Revised version appears in Kieras, D. & Meyer, D.E. (1997). An overview of the EPIC architecture for cognition and performance with application to human-computer interaction. Human-Computer Interaction., 12, 391-438. TR-EPIC-12.pdf Kieras, D.E., Meyer, D.E., Ballas, J.A., Lauber, E.J. Modern computational perspectives on executive mental processes and cognitive control. Where to from here? Final version appears in Kieras, D. E., Meyer, D. E., Ballas, J. A., & Lauber, E. J. (2000). Modern computational perspectives on executive mental control: Where to from here? In S. Monsell & J. Driver (Eds.), Control of cognitive processes: Attention and performance XVIII (pp. 681-712). Cambridge, MA: M.I.T. Press. HCI_04.pdf Hornof, A. J. (2004, in press). Cognitive strategies for the visual search of hierarchical computer displays. Human-Computer Interaction, 19(3), 183-223. This paper shows EPIC applied to a visual search task. The project demonstrates how an exploration of plausible search strategies can lead to interesting insights about how people search computer layouts. CHI_03.pdf Hornof, A. J., & Halverson, T. (2003). Cognitive strategies and eye movements for searching hierarchical computer displays. ACM CHI 2003: Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, New York: ACM, 249-256. This paper presents eye tracking data that validate the visual search models in Hornof (2004). -------------- The following is the contents of this directory as of July 26, 2004 2:00 PM EDT README_Mac.txt README_Windows.txt TutSoftwareReadmeWin.txt EPICAppSetup.exe EpicApplicationFiles.zip TutorialModelsWindows.zip WinQuickStart.pdf TutSoftwareReadmeMac.txt TutorialModelsMac.sitx MacQuickStart.pdf EPICPrinOP.pdf TR-EPIC-5.pdf TR-EPIC-12.pdf HCI_04.pdf CHI_03.pdf
